Truth is Often Paradoxical

The word enlightenment conjures up the idea of some superhuman accomplishment, and the ego likes to keep it that way, but it is simply your natural state of felt oneness with Being. It is a state of connectedness with something immeasurable and indestructible, something that, almost paradoxically, is essentially you and yet is much greater than you. It is finding your true nature beyond name and form.

As you go more deeply into this realm of no-mind, as it is sometimes called in the East, you realize the state of pure consciousness. In that state, you feel your own presence with such intensity and such joy that all thinking, all emotions, your physical body, as well as the whole external world become relatively insignificant in comparison to it. And yet this is not a selfish but a selfless state. It takes you beyond what you previously thought of as "your self." That presence is essentially you and at the same time inconceivably greater than you. What I am trying to convey here may sound paradoxical or even contradictory, but there is no other way that I can express it

To offer no resistance to life is to be in a state of grace, ease, and lightness. This state is then no longer dependent upon things being in a certain way, good or bad. It seems almost paradoxical, yet when your inner dependency on form is gone, the general conditions of your life, the outer forms, tend to improve greatly. Things, people, or conditions that you thought you needed for your happiness now come to you with no struggle or effort on your part, and you are free to enjoy and appreciate them -- while they last. All those things, of course, will still pass away, cycles will come and go, but with dependency gone there is no fear of loss anymore. Life flows with ease.

Ramana Maharshi recommended that one investigates by asking the question 'Who am I?'

When asked who you are, there might be a hesitation as to what to answer; but when asked if you exist, there is no such doubt. The answer is a resounding, 'Yes, of course I exist'.

The realization is that both questions have in fact the same answer. That which is sure of its existence – the innermost certainty of I Am - is what you essentially are. In other words: I Am this knowing that knows that I Am.
The Hindus say Tat Tvam Asi (That, Thou Art). In the Old Testament, God says, 'I Am that I Am.' This undeniable 'I Am' is not you in the personal sense, but the universal Self.

Ramana Maharshi called the fundamental oneness of 'I Am' and the universal Self 'I-I.'

Watching from this understanding, I see how thoughts appear in 'my' awareness like clouds in a clear sky and then, without a trace, dissolve back in to it. There’s even no need to proclaim that thoughts appear in my awareness. In Awareness suffices. Thoughts and everything else simply happen.
Everything is, without a 'me' orchestrating it from behind the scenes. The ego is as non-essential to thinking or to the general functioning of the body-mind organism as Atlas is to supporting the heavens. Just as the ancient Greeks at some point realized that, in fact, there never was a titan named Atlas supporting the firmament, you can realize there never was an actual ego supporting the absolute certainty of 'I Am.'

UNITED KINGDOM, August 12, 2009: Women who are optimistic have a lower risk of heart disease and death, an American study shows. The latest study by U.S. investigators mirrors the findings of earlier work by a Dutch team showing optimism reduces heart risk in men.
The research on nearly 100,000 women, published in the journal Circulation, found pessimists had higher blood pressure and cholesterol.
Optimistic women had a 9% lower risk of developing heart disease and a 14% lower risk of dying from any cause after more than eight years of follow-up.
A spokeswoman for the British Heart Foundation said: “We know that hostile emotions can release certain chemicals in the body which may increase the risk of heart disease, but we don’t fully understand how and why. “Optimistic or hostile attitudes can be linked to health behaviors such as smoking or poor diet, which may also influence heart health.
A good thing for all women is that regardless of your outlook, making healthy choices such as not smoking and eating well, will have much more of an impact on your heart health than your outlook.

First we must understand what the word divine means. Divine means: in a state of perfection. This state is experienced by God through man. In other words, when man has risen to the stage of development where he can be the perfect instrument of God, when nothing of his own being stands in the way of the direct impulse that comes from within -- that spirit may be called perfect. That which is most precious, that which is the purpose of man's life is to arrive at that state of perfection when he can be the perfect instrument of God.

It is in this stage that man begins to realize the truth of the whole being and he will think: 'The one whom I have called God, whose personality I have recognized, and whose pleasure or displeasure I have sought, has been seeing His life through my eyes, has been hearing through my ears. It was His breath that came through my breathing, His impulse which I felt, and therefore I know that this body which I had thought to be my own is really the true temple of God. I did not realize that this body was the shrine of God.' Not knowing that God experiences this life through man, one is seeking for Him somewhere else, in some person aloof and apart from the world, whereas all the time He is in oneself.

Why is God called the Creator? Because the creation itself is the evidence of some wisdom working. No mechanical creation could result in such perfection as that of nature. All the machines of the scientists are built on the model of nature's mechanism, and every inspiration that comes to the artist is received from nature. Nature is so perfect in itself that it needs no scientific or artistic improvement upon it; but to satisfy the limited human fancies man develops science and art. And yet it is still the creation of God which is expressed in art and science through man, as in man God is not absent. In some ways man is more able to finish His creation, which God completes through man.

In every soul there are four stages to pass through in order to come to the culmination of the ego, which means to reach the stage of the rose. The first stage is that a person is rough, thoughtless and inconsiderate. He is interested in what he wants and in what he likes; as such he is naturally blind to the needs and wants of others. In the second stage a man is decent and good as long as his interests are concerned. As long as he can get his wish fulfilled he is pleasant and kind and good and harmonious; but if he cannot get his wish and cannot have his way, then he becomes rough and crude and changes completely. And there is a third stage, when someone is more concerned with another person's wish and desire, and less with himself; when his whole heart is seeking for what he can do for another. In his thought the other person comes first and he comes afterwards. That is the beginning of turning into the rose. It is only a rosebud, but then in the fourth stage this rosebud blooms in the person who entirely forgets himself in doing kind deeds for others.

In the wonderful epic the Ramayana, Ram's wife, Sita, is kidnapped by a huge demon who lives in the island fortress of Sri Lanka. Hanuman discovers where Sita is hidden, but Ram's army cannot reach Sri Lanka because they have no way to cross the ocean. So they start building a bridge across the ocean. This bridge is still visible under the ocean in NASA photographs from outer space. Ram's army consisted of various Gods who incarnated as bears and monkeys. They all had enormous strength, and were capable of carrying many enormous boulders and hills.
While this construction was going on, small squirrels were seen carrying pebbles, roots, and twigs to assist in the construction. Some of the monkeys and bears started to laugh at this sight. Others wanted the squirrels to desist from the work, fearing that they would get trampled underfoot or smashed by the huge boulders the bears and monkeys were carrying.
Rama, on the other hand, took the matter very seriously. "No one is too small to assist Me in my work" he said. He let the squirrels continue their loving service.

I found it lying on the path in the forest a few days ago. Take it, I give it to you, offered the sannyasin with all simplicity. The villager looked at the stone in amazement it was an enormous diamond. He took the diamond and went away quickly. All that night he tossed in his bed and could not sleep. In recent years the science and practice of psychology has been moving gradually away from the medical approach that focuses on pathology towards an approach that focuses on what makes a healthy, happy and resilient mind. This new approach is known as Positive Psychology. Positive Psychology (the truth about Who or What we really are) can give us 'different eyes.' Eyes that are not shaped by the past but by a fuller appreciation of the present moment and the future with all its possibilities.
As we become more 'conscious,' our attention will be shaped less by your conditioned self (biography, culture, social roles, biology) and more by our core BEING, who we truly are. When attention is stemming from BEING, our eyes are as fresh as a child's eyes, our choices are more authentic: they are right for us and owned by us.
We will see, understand and relate differently to all the parts within us that create the whole sense of who we are. We will experience a greater sense of wholeness, of inner peace, of knowing and accepting Who or What we really are.
As a result, the essence of our 'BEING' nature -- such as joy, connection, curiosity, gratitude and abundance -- will be more expressed.
We will feel more connection and flow with others. Less of our psychic energy will be wasted on regret, shame, self doubts and worry. Returning to NOW will free a lot of energy for optimal functioning.
We will be truer in expressing ourselves (e.g more assertive) and in pursuing our goals. We will be more flexible shifting attention to notice the brighter and funnier aspects of life. We will be inspired to see possibilities in challenges and hardships.

USA, July 10, 2009: A long-awaited study of aging in rhesus monkeys suggests that people may be able to fend off the usual diseases of old age and considerably extend their life span by following a caloric restriction diet — one containing all the normal healthy ingredients, but with 30 percent fewer calories than usual.

Results reported Thursday in Science, show that now, 20 years after the experiment began, the monkeys (whose average life span is 27 years) are showing many beneficial signs of caloric restriction, including significantly less diabetes, cancer, and heart and brain disease. Of the dieting group, only 13 percent have died in ways judged to be due to old age, vs. 37 percent of the comparison group.

Some critics say that applying these conclusions to humans at this time is premature; but one of the study leaders affirmed, “It says much of the biology of caloric restriction is translatable into primates–which makes it more likely it would apply to humans.”

[HPI notes: Modern Science may think it is too early to conclude, but Hindu sages have long held that control of appetite, mitahara, and control of breath, pranayama, are the keys to longevity and health. Hinduism Today's founder Sivaya Subramuniyaswami wrote, "Mitahara is a restraint that we must all obey. The body knows no wisdom; it would eat and drink itself to death if it had its way."

Although the teachings of Sri Ramana Maharshi are commonly regarded as pertaining to the Spiritual Path of Knowledge (Jnana Marga) mainly through Self-enquiry (Atma Vichara), those who lived with him proclaimed his words to have universal appeal. Thus one of his close disciples, Arthur Osborne, wrote of Bhagavan’s teaching:

“Sri Bhagavan spoke and wrote most about the vichara or Self-enquiry, and therefore the opinion arose that He prescribed only jnana-marga, the Path of Knowledge, which most people find too sheer in this age. But in fact He was universal and provided guidance for every temperament, by the path of Devotion no less than of Knowledge. Love and devotion to Him are a bridge across the abyss to salvation. He had many devotees for whom he prescribed no other path.”

It has been said of those who lived with Bhagavan that though many of Bhagavan’s disciples flowered in the fullness of jnana, what strikes us most in them is their total love and bhakti to Bhagavan.

Bhagavan declared that regardless of the chosen path towards God, the goal remains ever one and the same. Thus the Maharshi, the embodiment of Love, enticed us with His words, with His glance, with His life that shone upon us as a brilliant sun to know:

“The eternal, unbroken, natural state of abiding in the Self is jnana. To abide in the Self you must love the Self. Since God is verily the Self, love of the Self is love of God; and that is bhakti. Jnana and bhakti are thus one and the same…. their purpose is to lead you to dhyana, to meditation, which ends in Self-realization.”

The contents of this website demonstrate that Sri Ramana’s life and teaching blossomed as a Lotus of Purity and Perfection drawing seekers from the world over to ‘seek and find’ through a practice of a Godly life which reaches its fulfillment in Self-realization.

During Bhagavan’s childhood he read mainly two books, one was the Holy Bible. His life and teaching forged an eternal alliance between spiritual aspirants from both the East and West.

From whatever region of this world we hail from, and with whatever method we choose to free ourselves from Earthly sorrow, his words still ring true regarding the attainment of the unending happiness in liberation.

The ultimate purpose, for which the soul is seeking every moment of our life, is our spiritual purpose. And you may ask how to attain to that purpose. The answer is that what you are seeking for is within yourself. Instead of looking outside, you must look within. The way to proceed to accomplish this is for some moments to suspend all your senses such as sight, hearing, smell, touch, in order to put a screen before the outside life. And by concentration and by developing that meditative quality you will sooner or later get in touch with the inner Self which is more communicative, which speaks more loudly than all the noises of this world. And this gives joy, creates peace, and produces in you a self-sufficient spirit, a spirit of independence, of true liberty. The moment you get in touch with your Self you are in communion with God. It is in this way, if God-communication is sought rightly, that spirituality is attained.

There is one mystical understanding of life that runs through the very core of all major religions. This is the belief, and to many the cherished experience, that our sojourn on earth is not true life. These most ancient scriptures and Masters teach that everything appearing to us here is a mere appearance, behind which we should penetrate, or that it is only a forecourt of the true world, a forecourt which we should cross without paying much attention to.

Hidden within these very scriptures, though obscured through misinterpretation, is a profound truth that utterly refutes this belief. The Vedas, and their essential distillation given in the Bhagavad Gita, the Holy Bible, the Torah, and the Koran definitively proclaim that what a man does here and now with holy intent is no less important, no less true - being a terrestrial indeed, but non the less a factual, link with divine being - than the life in the world to come
